Letter to the Editor – San Jose State alumnus issues praise for Cornhusker fans

I have been a San Jose State football fan since 1964, and I would like to express my gratitude to the multitude of Nebraska Cornhusker fans who enabled me to experience one of the most enjoyable football Saturdays that I’ve ever experienced.

Five of us Spartan fans, who had taken a flight from California to Nebraska to attend the Sept. 6th game, started out game day early by filling a Styrofoam throw-away cooler with “soft drinks” and heading on foot to one of the parking lots outside Memorial Stadium. We felt a bit intimidated, being surrounded by hundreds of Husker fans dressed in red, while the five of us wore the only blue attire in sight. Within 5 minutes after we had plopped our cooler down in an empty parking spot, however, a local fan walked over to us, introduced herself and insisted that we come and join her family who was tailgating nearby. By the time the game was about to start, we had a new group of friends and e-mail addresses had been exchanged.

Later on, as we were leaving the stadium after the game, countless numbers of Husker fans called out pleasantries to us as they passed by us – some even thanking us for making the trip to come and see the game. It literally took us more than two hours to make our way through the parking lot and to leave the campus, because we stopped to visit with six different groups of Husker fans who invited us to tailgate with them.

After having been the recipient of so much kindness and hospitality, I believe that Nebraska Cornhusker fans set an example that football fans throughout the nation should try to emulate. I know that in the future, whenever I meet visiting fans at my alma mater’s home football games, I will try to make like a Cornhusker.
