Day of the Dead preparations
Oct 29th, 2009 | By admin | Category: Campus News, Issue, October 29, 2009Students and volunteers decorated the Sheldon Museum of Art’s Great Hall on Oct. 26 for the museum’s Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration.
Dia de los Muertos is a centuries-old spiritual tradition expressing the continuity of life by honoring the dead on their return to Earth for one day each year.
Community artists and UNL students in Anne Burton’s Art in Community class, working with Schoo and Park middle school students, created the art installations. Small sculptures and masks will be available for purchase through a silent auction from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6.
Exhibit events include a masquerade ball, 7 to 10 p.m., Oct. 29 (cost is $35 per person), and a free family day, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 31. Reservations for the ball can be made by contacting Laurie Sipple at lsipple2@unl.edu or 472-1170.
The Dia de los Muertos decorations will be on view through Nov. 15.
