Pérez named associate vice chancellor

Lance Pérez, an associate professor of electrical engineering, has accepted appointment as an associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. The appointment was announced in early May by Ellen Weissinger, interim senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Pérez will begin the job Aug. 15 and assume responsibilities now performed by Evelyn Jacobson. Those duties include faculty appointments, academic program reviews and department head/chair development. Jacobson, who has been an associate vice chancellor since 1997, returns to the faculty as a professor in Modern Languages and Literatures.

Pérez is a former associate dean of the College of Engineering and is returning to UNL after serving two years as a program manager in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation.

He earned his undergraduate degree from University of Virginia and his masters and doctorate from University of Notre Dame. He joined UNL in August, 1996.

At UNL he has received the Holling Family Master Teacher Award and a College Award for Distinguished Teaching. He is principal investigator or co-PI on more than $5 million of current external funding. He led successful accreditation reviews for his department, and coordinated an academic program review and developed several new programs and initiatives, including international initiatives.

“He brings a wide-ranging interest in higher education to the position,” Weissinger said.
