Students, professor guide dead creations

Working with youngsters at Park and Mickle middle schools, students in UNL’s Art in Community class created nine sculptures and 18 papel picados (paper banners) for the “El Dia de Los Muertos” celebration, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Sheldon Museum of Art.

Each student in the class spent 80 to 120 hours over three weeks to create the pieces. The Art in Community class is led by Sandra Williams, associate professor of art.

Portnoy talks mental health issues in China

From June 15 to July 5, Bob Portnoy, director of Counseling and Psychological Services, traveled to four universities in China, delivering psychology lectures and discussing mental health topics with young scholars and new colleagues.

Portnoy remains in contact with mental health professionals and students in China. He has already been invited back for more lectures and plans to return.

Levin curates exhibit in Washington, D.C.

Carole Levin, Willa Cather professor of history, curated a new exhibit at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. “To Sleep, Perchance to Dream” was on display Feb. 19 through May 30.

The exhibit featured Levin’s research on dreams in early modern England. The research stemmed from a 2006-07 National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship spent at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
