Obituary — Judy Driskell

Services are scheduled for Feb. 24 for Judy Driskell, professor emeritus of nutrition and health sciences, who died Feb. 21 after a lengthy illness.

Driskell joined UNL’s faculty in 1989 and retired in 2009. During her tenure at UNL, she also served as department chair. Before joining UNL, she held teaching, research, and administrative positions at Auburn University, Florida State University and Virginia Tech. She also was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and two universities in Indonesia.

Her research interests included vitamins and sports nutrition. She published approximately 20 books, 200 refereed journal research articles, and numerous technical and lay publications. She received a national Borden Award for Research in Applied Fundamental Knowledge of Human Nutrition and several other research awards. She contributed to the education of over 200 graduate and over 1,000 undergraduate students. She was a member and past-president of Lincoln South Rotary club and a member of Southern Heights Presbyterian Church.

Driskell earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Mississippi and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University.

She is survived by her spouse, William “Bill” Peters, Lincoln; her father, Ralph Driskell, Wilmer, Ala.; and brothers, John Driskell (wife Barbara and son David) in Wilmer, Ala., Jerry Driskell (wife Barbel and daughter Valeri White) of Fairhope, Ala., and Jim Driskell (wife Denise and daughter Sara). Her step-daughter Sharon Baranowski (husband Chris), grandson Tony, and granddaughter Sarah of Omaha, also survive.
