Retired law professor Richard S. Harnsberger died March 29. He was 90.

Harnsberger joined the NU College of Law faculty in 1956 and retired in 1992. Prior to joining the law faculty, he was a lecturer in the College of Business Administration from 1954-1956. He was in private practice in Lincoln from 1949-1955 and worked in the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office from 1954-1955. While at the law college, he held the Cline Williams-Flavel A. Wright professorship. In 1999, he was honored with the Groundwater Foundation’s 1999 Maurice Kremer Groundwater Achievement Award. The Nebraska State Bar Foundation presented him with its 2001 Outstanding Legal Educator Award. The Lawrence Berger and Richard S. Harnsberger Faculty Wing of the College of Law was dedicated in 2003.

Harnsberger joined the U.S. Military in 1943 attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army’s 773d Field Artillery Battalion. At the end of World War II he was awarded five bronze battle stars for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He earned his B.S., 1943; J.D., cum laude, 1949; and M.A., 1951 from the University of Nebraska. He was a member of member, Phi Kappa Psi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Order of the Coif. He earned his S.J.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in 1959.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jean. He is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.
