Gilbert and Sullivan Classic Pirates At Lied

The renowned Gilbert and Sullivan touring repertory company Opera a la Carte will stage a production of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic The Pirates of Penzance at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26.

The Pirates of Penzance is a longtime popular classic.
The Pirates of Penzance is a longtime popular classic.

The plot of The Pirates of Penzance features a rollicking band of pirates, giggling maidens and their “very model of a modern Major-General” father, along with a dashing pirate apprentice, a nursemaid and a bunch of policemen as the key ingredients.

Heading the cast is the company director Richard Sheldon as the Major-General with long-time Opera A La Carte member Rollin Lofdahl as the Pirate King. Soprano Carol Winston sings the role of the General’s daughter Mabel, while tenor Craig Gilmore appears as the pirate apprentice Frederic in love with her. Ruth, Frederic’s former nursemaid, is played by mezzo soprano Piper Pack, who made her debut with the company last summer, and bass Jim Brown as the Sergeant of Police reminds us that “a policeman’s lot is not a happy one.”

Sheldon will give a lecture 30 minutes before curtain in the Lied Steinhart Room.

Tickets for this performance are $45, $35 and $30; tickets are half-price for college students with identification and those 18 and younger. Call the Lied box office at 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for tickets.
