Survey builds rapport

This is one in a recurring feature spotlighting the ways that results from the 2002 Gallup survey have been used to make positive changes on campus.

The Department or College: Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean’s Neighborhood. Dean Giacomo Oliva answered our questions about the neighborhood’s results.

The question addressed from the survey: “At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day.”

Why was this question addressed? “The staff wanted to maintain an ongoing conversation about their accomplishments and contributions as these related to both their office responsibilities and their personal activities.”

What was the action taken? “We discussed strategies at our January 2003 staff meeting, and then began sharing accomplishments regularly at our monthly staff meetings.”

How has the survey and its results benefited your department? “It enabled us to bring to light concerns that staff members had related to their feeling isolated and unappreciated in the workplace, and as a result, enabled us to strengthen the communication among everyone in the dean’s office.”
