Sound of Music to fill Lied

One of America’s most beloved musicals, The Sound of Music, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 12, 2 and 7:30 p.m. March 13 and 1 and 5:30 p.m. March 14 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.

The musical, featuring music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, is set in Salzburg, Austria, in the late 1930s and tells the true story of Maria Rainer. She becomes a governess for the seven children of the widowed Capt. von Trapp, and she develops a rapport with the children that leads to her marriage to the captain. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover that the Nazis have invaded Austria and have demanded the captain’s immediate service in their navy. The finale illustrates the family’s escape over the mountains to Switzerland and freedom.

The musical features several well-known Rodgers and Hammerstein songs, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Edelweiss.” Rodgers and Hammerstein also wrote music for Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific and The King and I. Their musicals have earned 34 Tony Awards, 15 Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, two Grammy Awards and one Emmy Award.

The original production of The Sound of Music opened at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Nov. 16, 1959. This production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for 1,443 performances. The 1965 film version earned five Academy Awards including Best Picture and is one of the most successful movie musicals of all time.

Tickets for this performance are $45, $40 and $35; tickets are half-price for college students and those 18 and under with identification. Call the Lied box office at 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for tickets.
