‘Movies on the Green’ starts July 8

“Movies on the Green” will provide cinematic entertainment on summer evenings on the UNL City Campus.

From July 8 through Aug. 12, the University Program Council will present classic movies beginning at dusk, around 9 p.m., Thursdays on the lawn outside Kimball Recital Hall. Admission is free, and popcorn and soda will be sold at the event.

The schedule of “Movies on the Green”:

July 8: The Buddy Holly Story, 1978. This biography of ’50s rockabilly legend Buddy Holly stars Gary Busey, who was nominated for an Oscar for this role. The movie tells of the young star’s rise with the hit “That’ll Be the Day” and details the events leading up to the plane crash that killed him and two others in February 1959.

July 15: Kramer vs. Kramer, 1979. This adaptation of the novel by Avery Corman about the aftermath of divorce stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in Oscar-winning roles.

July 22: Gulliver’s Travels, 1939. Dave and Max Fleischer, who created Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons, used their animation skills to create this feature film adaptation of Swift’s novel.

July 29: Butterflies Are Free, 1972. Edward Albert plays Don Baker, a blind man who moves away from his mother. He falls in love with Jill, played by Goldie Hawn, who lives in the apartment next door, and must convince his mother that Jill is good for him.

Aug. 5: Anatomy of a Murder, 1959. James Stewart plays a wily small-town lawyer working to convince a jury that an Army lieutenant is innocent of killing a bar owner because he was the victim of an “irresistible impulse.” The plot becomes complicated by the nature of the criminal and defendants.

Aug. 12: Repulsion, 1965. This is director Roman Polanski’s first movie filmed in English and stars Catherine Deneuve as an isolated young woman who descends into paranoia and schizophrenia during a stay alone at her sister’s apartment.
