Fans watch Nebraska play Kansas in 1923, one of the first home football games in what was then known as War Memorial Stadium. This image shows construction wasn't quite complete on the stadium, and it shows how standards of dress for games have changed in 80 years.

More than 80 years ago, alumnus Harold Holtz led other alumni in a campaign to raise $300,000 toward the cost of building "War Memorial Stadium," named in honor of the University of Nebraska students who died in World War I. Although the word "War" has been dropped from the stadium's name, the building still serves as a memorial and home field of the Huskers.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the stadium was held in April 1923, and the first game was played against Oklahoma on Oct. 13, 1923. Nebraska played Kansas (also this weekend's opponent) on the day the stadium was dedicated, Oct. 20, 1923. A capacity crowd of 16,000 watched the teams play in the unfinished stadium to a 0-0 tie.

At that time, the completed stadium held 31,000 fans. The capacity was increased to 48,000 in 1964 and 63,000 in 1966. AstroTurf was added in 1970, and the completion of the south end zone seating in 1972 raised capacity to 76,000.

In this weekly feature, the Scarlet takes a look back at a moment of UNL's past through a historical photo, story or short trivia item.
