A Piece of University History

As the image at right indicates, a Homecoming rivalry with the Tigers of the University of Missouri, like the one we have coming up this Saturday, is nothing new. This Homecoming float by the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity won second place in the university's Homecoming house decoration contest before the Nov. 2, 1946, game.

The first Homecoming event at Nebraska was held in 1912 and was planned by George W. Kline, alumni secretary. It featured a banquet held after the football game. Decorations on greek houses began in 1923, the same year Memorial Stadium was dedicated.

But unfortunately, in that 1946 game, the Tigers "tamed" the Huskers, 21-20.

In this weekly feature, the Scarlet takes a look back at a moment of UNL's past through a historical photo, story or short trivia item.
