UNL again named top 10 place to work

For the second year in a row, UNL has earned a spot in the top 10 of The Scientist’s “Best Places to Work in Academia” survey. UNL was placed fourth by the magazine in its online survey. The results and an accompanying story appeared in the Nov. 8 issue.

“The U.S. institutions that made the top 10 list in The Scientist’s 2004 Best Places to Work in Academia survey represent an interesting mix of small and large academic and private research centers from across the country. The characteristics that make them great places to work, however, are surprisingly similar,” the report said. “While some campuses on the top-10 list received lower scores on questions related to salaries, most survey respondents didn’t consider those questions as important when evaluating the quality of their workplaces. The top institutions did, however, score highly in areas that most life scientists consider crucial including research facilities and respect for peers.”

The top 10 in order were: California Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Washington), UNL, Cornell University, University of Delaware, University of Michigan, Fox Chase Cancer Center (Pennsylvania), Wadworth Center (New York) and Indiana University.

Detailed information on the survey is available here.

The sample for the survey was self-selected. More than 35,000 scientists were invited to participate in a Web-based questionnaire, and 1,456 usable responses were received from the United States, Canada and Europe. In the survey, respondents were asked to assess their working conditions and environments on 39 statements in eight areas.
