Day to focus on computer security

UNL will offer Nebraska Information Technology Security Day, in cooperation with National Computer Security Day, on Nov. 30 at the Nebraska Union.

The free event, which is open to the public, will feature experts in various areas of computer security as a way to improve awareness of information technology security.

Information about times and locations of presentations will be available at the Nebraska Union at registration, which begins at 8:30 a.m.

The conference will address topics including security planning and assessment, cryptography and security certifications, "malware" such as viruses and Trojan horses, digital signatures, security audits, authentication, digital watermarking and identity management.

Hal Berghel, director of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas School of Computer Science, will give the keynote address at 9 a.m. He is founding director of the UNLV Center for Cybermedia Research and the Internet Forensics Lab, as well as co-director of the international Identity Theft and Financial Fraud Research and Operations Center. His topic will be the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002.

Other speakers include Jim Gilley, senior scientist, Transcrypt International; Steve Hartman, director for the Nebraska Directory Services project, central data processing, Nebraska Statehouse; and others from UNL and its Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
