Chancellor urges all to help with Student Recruitment

(The following email was sent to all faculty and staff by Chancellor Harvey Perlman on Jan. 11.)

Welcome back to the start of a new semester. I hope you all had a very happy or restful (or both) holiday season. I had hoped to write you before the first major snow fall describing the elaborate and sophisticated methods we use to determine whether to call off the University but we were preempted by events. Now I've decided to keep our methodology secret, other than to give you assurance that rumors of the roulette wheel in the basement of Canfield are not true!

Seriously, we are starting a semester in which there is much work to do. The strategic planning process will culminate later this Spring. While I doubt there are many on this campus who have been more skeptically outspoken about strategic planning than I, I am increasingly convinced that, if done correctly, it will help us move the university forward over the long-run. I hope you will all participate where appropriate and hold those of us in the administration responsible if the process results in a meaningless exercise.

Our second biggest challenge is to address any inappropriate barriers to increasing our enrollment. Thanks to the efforts of the Enrollment Management Council we have an agenda of possible reforms that could make a difference. In the end, however, the small and seemingly insignificant interactions that prospective students and their families have with the University help create an impression of UNL that is often more powerful than our fancy recruiting brochures (or even the Tommy Lee show). That means that each of us, regardless of our position, must always be in recruiting mode.

Finally, I am hopeful that the new legislative session will not produce too many occasions when I need to write you with bad news. Certainly tax revenues are better but there are many claimants for the new funds and there are significant challenges ahead. I know of no better "campaign" for us than to promote the many exciting things that you continue to achieve on behalf of students and the people of Nebraska. Our message, one in which I passionately believe, is that this state cannot prosper without a strong, vibrant, research university and that you are proving the truth of this every day.

Remember that Michelle Waite in my office is our legislative liaison. I have no intention of trying to limit your contacts with Senators and others. I only ask that if you do have significant contacts or conversations that you keep Michelle informed.

My best wishes to each of you for another successful semester. Thank you for your continuing support.

- Harvey
