Shapiro's stories about American Jews basis for film
English professor Gerry Shapiro has a sharp eye for the condition of secular Jews in the United States. Now his observations, fleshed out in his short story collection "Bad Jews and Other Stories," are the basis of King of the Corner, a film starring several of today's most accomplished actors.

Research Service-Learning connects students with communities
Take a typical sophomore whose interests are wide-ranging and entice her to enroll in a pilot class on civic engagement. The following summer, she interns at a shelter for battered Latinas in Chicago and does some research on their child care needs. Back at school, she takes a course exploring domestic violence, and interns with a local agency serving battered women. Following graduation, she has a year-long fellowship in India working on domestic violence issues. She returns to her university to head up that fellowship program.
Real Nebraska night at the movies March 3
Student filmmakers will strut the Big Red Carpet at the Real Nebraska Movie Awards show March 3. That's when all eight student-produced movies will screen at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center and the $1,000 grand prize winner will be announced.

Celebration of Graduate Student Work is March 4
The annual Celebration of Graduate Student Work will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 4, in the Van Brunt Visitors Center. The event is free and open to the public.
Symposium looks at collectors, museums and artists
"Collectors, Collecting, and Collections," the second biennial symposium organized by the International Quilt Study Center will be Feb. 24-26. The symposium focuses on the phenomenon of collecting, particularly the collecting of quilts. Participants will engage in discussions about the ways collectors influence museums, markets, artists and source communities.
Eating Disorders Awareness Week
A week to Love Your Body is planned in observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Feb. 28 to March 4. The Eating Disorders Education and Prevention Student Association planned all activities sponsored on campus and hope the week will help foster healthy ideas and encourage students to develop self-esteem and self-respect based on wellness principles.
A Piece of University History
The first African-American man to play football for the University of Nebraska was George A. Flippin. When he took to the gridiron in 1891, he was one of just five African American players nationwide. He was born in Ohio in 1868 and moved with his father, Dr. Charles Flippin, to Nebraska. Charles Flippin was a freed slave who fought in the Civil War.

Theatrix staging The Baby Dance
Theatrix, the student theatrical producing organization at UNL, opens its spring season with Jane Anderson's The Baby Dance. Directed by undergraduate Brittany Leffler, performances are at 7:30 p.m. March 3, 4 and 5 with an additional performance at 10:30 p.m. on March 4 in the Studio Theatre, third floor Temple Building. Admission is $5 at the door only. Doors open one-half hour prior to curtain.

Amish quilts at new exhibition draw comparisons to modern art
Three outstanding groups of Amish quilts from the collections of the International Quilt Study Center are featured in the upcoming exhibition The Collector's Eye: Amish Quilts from the International Quilt Study Center Collections at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery. The quilts represent the finest collection of Amish quilts known. The graphic qualities of these quilts is striking.
UNL Symphonic Band Performances
The UNL Symphonic Band is performing at 11 a.m. March 4 in Kimball Recital Hall. This performance is part of the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association Convention; admission is free. The Symphonic Band is also performing at 7:30 p.m. March 10 in Kimball Hall. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.
Statewide examines children's obesity
This week on Statewide executive producer Bill Kelly looks at the growing problem of obesity among our state's young people. This episode of Statewide will air at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 on NETV.
Girls' HS Basketball Tourney Airs on NETV
The best girls' basketball teams in Nebraska invade Lincoln to battle it out for the state championships in six different classes with the finals telecast live from the Bob Devaney Sports Center on March 5, on the statewide Nebraska ETV Network.
