Student info system switches to NU Ids

The UNL Student Information System will begin using eight-digit NU ID numbers from campus ID cards rather than Social Security numbers as primary identification of students.

This change will affect the online system and printed reports and documents, such as class and grade rosters. Social Security numbers will be retained in the database, but used only when absolutely necessary.

Concerns by students and faculty regarding the use of Social Security numbers coupled with the growing trend of identity theft are reasons for this change. It is also one of the first steps to transition the UNL campus from widespread use of Social Security numbers to the use of the NU ID numbers.

To ease the transition, users of the online student information system can enter either a Social Security or NU ID number to look up student information. The system is currently set up to accept any eight-digit entry as a NU ID number, and nine digits as a Social Security query. Students will also be able to use either number with an assigned PIN to access the WAM system.
