Repertory Theatre readies for season

The 38th season of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, titled "A Season of Journeys," will feature two main stage comedies and a musical for the entire family this summer.

Virginia Smith, associate professor of Theatre at UNL, will guide the productions as the new art director. The Nebraska Repertory Theatre is the professional wing of the Department of Theatre Arts at UNL.

Productions include Androcles and the Lion by Aurand Harris, Resident Alien by Stuart Spencer, and Bus Stop by William Inge.

Androcles and the Lion is a romp through the fable of the slave who removes a thorn from a lion's paw only to receive payment for his kindness when the lion spares his life later.

Organized in a comedic style, Androcles and the Lion performances are in the Studio Theatre, third floor of the Temple Building. Dates and curtain times are at 6:30 p.m. June 30 and July 1, with a free gala opening celebratory picnic. Just show your ticket for the performance. Other performances are at 2 p.m. July 2, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.

Resident Alien is a play about an alien abduction. A Martian bus boy jumps off the "Mother Ship" in northern Wisconsin and joins the local residents in a journey of finding community as he makes comments about our society.

Performances for Resident Alien are in the Howell Theatre, first floor Temple Building. Dates and curtain times are at 7:30 p.m. July 7, 8, 9, 16, 20, 21, 29, 30 and Aug. 3. Audience members are invited to join the cast for a wine and cheese reception following the July 7 opening performance.

Inge said that Bus Stop is his exploration of different kinds of love. Imagine a bus stranded on the Great Plains in a blizzard.

The people on the bus and the people in the restaurant where it stops discover love in all its various guises.

Performances are in the Howell Theatre. Dates and curtain times are at 7:30 p.m. July 14, 15, 22, 23, 27, 28 and Aug. 4, 5, 6. Audience members are invited to join the cast for a wine and cheese reception following the July 14 opening performance.

Nebraska Repertory Theatre tickets are available through the Lied Center Ticket Office, 472-4747, Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and one hour prior to performances in the designated theatre lobby.

A special bonus for the season is Tuesday Destinations, a Tuesday evening series free to season ticket holders or $5 at the door.

Shows include Over the Rainbow on July 19, Retreat from Moscow on July 26 and a reading of Ted Kooser poetry by Cork Ramer on Aug. 2.

Over the Rainbow and Retreat from Moscow will be in the Studio Theatre, while the poetry reading is in the Howell Theatre. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m.
