UNL delegation presents book to tribes

A delegation from UNL visited the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes of the Flathead Reservation July 3-7, to formally present a book on the encounter of the Salish people with Lewis and Clark.

The book, The Salish People and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, was written by the Salish-Pend d'Oreille Culture Committee and Elders Cultural Advisory Council of the confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes.

Published by the University of Nebraska Press, the book offers an in-depth examination of the events and historical significance of the tribes' encounter with the Lewis and Clark expedition.

"In this book, Salish-Pend d'Oreille people are telling the real story of the encounter of the Salish-Pend d'Oreille people with Lewis and Clark-how it happened, what took place, the feelings that were there, those stories that only the Salish people can tell . . . stories that were passed down from generation to generation, that we have learned from interviewing our elders over the years," said Tony Incashola, director of the tribal culture committee.
