This cartoon and poem from the 1916 Cornhusker represents changing attitudes as the Women's Suffrage movement gathered steam in Nebraska. Women in Nebraska earned the right to vote with the passage of a limited suffrage law in 1917. That law - signed by Gov. Keith Neville on April 17, 1917 - allowed women to vote in municipal and presidential elections only.
A referendum petition drive was organized in Nebraska, and the limited suffrage law was nearly overturned.
However, 85 years ago today, women nationwide earned the right to vote in all elections as Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, giving the measure the two-thirds majority of state approval necessary to become federal law.
