Speaker to review national trends in student advising

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Charlie Nutt, associate director of the National Academic Advising Association, will examine trends in student advising during a three-part program, 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 30 in the Nebraska Union.

In the first part of the program, Nutt will review the relationships among academic advising, student successes and retention, then overview the kinds of promising advising practices emerging nationwide as universities work to encourage student retention and successful degree completion; ease student transition into college; increase adviser-student contact; approach the student and student learning experience more holistically; promote student identification and engagement with degree programs; and provide clear, consistent and accurate program information that is easily accessible to students.

In the second part of the program, a panel of UNL students will draw on their experiences to indicate the promise they see in practices outlined by Nutt. And, in the final part, audience members can ask questions of Nutt and the student panel.

According to Barbara Couture, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs, the program is designed to help the campus prepare strong proposals for "Advising for Success" grants offered under the Initiative for Teaching and Learning Excellence, a second-year program directed at teaching excellence and enhanced undergraduate student learning, advising, retentions and success.

Couture said special attention will be given to ITLE proposals that enhance retention through strong and creative advising and support services.
