Lied hosts world premiere of Rinde Eckert's 'Horizon'
Rinde Eckert, librettist, composer, and actor, will present the world premiere of his new work, "Horizon," in the Lied Center's Johnny Carson Theater Oct. 27 and Oct. 28. The Lied Center for Performing Arts is the lead commissioner of this project along with the Mondavi Center at the University of California, Davis; the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland; and Arts and Cultural Programming at Montclair State University, New Jersey.

"Horizon," a play with music, explores one theologian's crisis of faith, not over his religious convictions, but over the character of his service to those ideals. Reinhart Poole has been asked to leave the seminary where he teaches "ethics." His teachings draw provocative questions from the Bible, which land him in trouble with the powers that be. The storyline of "Horizon" follows Poole over one night as he writes his last lecture and contemplates his future.
Eckert's inspiration for "Horizon" was the life and ideas of Reinhold Niebuhr, an influential American theologian and social theorist, and also Eckert's own grandfather, a Lutheran minister, who taught religious history at a seminary in Fremont, Neb.
