Alumni help fund new calving shed for NCTA

Alumni support has helped the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture purchase an indoor calving facility.

The portable facility - purchased with $10,000 raised by alumni and college supporters - was purchased to honor Andy Knepp's 50 years of service and his ability to "hold things together with bailing wire and twine" on the college farm. Knepp is currently the college's farm manager.

The calving shed purchase includes the 12-foot by 50-foot building, a generator and paneling. The building provides additional flexibility by limiting the need for trips to veterinary clinics, helping to control disease and expanding teaching facilities.

The calving shed is the latest in a series of campus improvements in the last few years. Other recent upgrades include a new Livestock Teaching Center and Arena, cattle working facilities, and an artificial insemination area.

"The support from the alumni and industry people means they have faith in our future," said Jo Beck, professor. "Most of the donors are involved in industry and understand what we need and why. They know it will be used on a regular basis."

The college will calve 40 head in January and February. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned at that time.

The Andy Knepp Fundraising project remains open. All funds are to be used to continue improvements in the animal science and farm areas of the campus in Curtis.
