Air Force ROTC sweeps national honors

UNL's Air Force ROTC program, Detachment 465, was awarded the Right of Line award for 2005, recognizing it as the best ROTC unit in the nation. Also, UNL AFROTC Cadet Janelle (Jenniges) Palatas of Ellsworth, Minn., won the U.S. Air Force Cadet of the Year Award for 2005.

This is the first time one detachment won both awards in the same year.

Detachment 465 was judged No. 1 among 144 detachments nationwide, based on excellence in academics, physical fitness and extracurricular programs, as well as recruitment and retention of cadets.

UNL's Air Force ROTC cadets lead six student organizations and participate in events supporting the university as well as the local community. In 2005, the cadets achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.12 and an average physical fitness test score of 91 out of 100 points.

A senior meteorology-climatology major, Palatas won the Cadet of the Year Award over more than 15,000 other Air Force ROTC cadets. She made the dean's list seven out of seven semesters, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.95, has six perfect 4.0 semesters, and was initiated into the prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. She is also a top physical fitness performer, garnering several perfect scores on ROTC physical fitness tests.
