University Fence

A couple stands in a gateway of the original University of Nebraska campus fence in this undated photo.

Built in 1892, the fence bound the original 11 acres of campus, running along 10th, 12th, R and T streets. The fence served to keep campus grass safe from wandering cattle and to enforce a strict curfew that had gates locked at 10 p.m.

There is no official record as to why the fence was removed. However, many accounts say that the fence blocked the Lincoln Fire Department from extinguishing a fire on campus. The fence was relocated to Wyuka Cemetery in 1922 and the gates were placed in storage. In 1955, an endowment from alumnus Ralph Mueller allowed for the gates to be restored and placed alongside the columns near Ed Weir track.
