Gallup survey review begins

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

Results from the April Gallup survey of UNL staff and faculty are in, and work-unit neighborhoods will begin analyzing and sharing the results, and developing action plans to address engagement and inclusivity.

After analyzing the 3,946 Web-based survey responses, reports have been forwarded to unit supervisors, according to Herb Howe, chancellor Harvey Perlman's associate.

"The results are interesting although there is nothing statistically significant in the figures," he said. "It does appear though that employees are aligned with the chancellor's thinking on what constitutes this university community.

"When we think about it, we already know it is important that we need to do our part to create a better work climate for one another every day. The value of the project is in the continuing follow-up education and engagement dialogue that units are beginning again now."

The biannual "Q12" engagement and "I10" inclusivity employee surveys of UNL campus climate in 2002, 2004 and 2006 have given faculty and staff a chance to voice opinions and rate their satisfaction with their work unit "neighborhoods." The most useful outcome of those surveys has been the discussion they have generated, Howe said. The 2006 results will be shared in neighborhoods to further that discussion.

The 2006 survey included questions assessing engagement with the university's priorities, strategic planning and accreditation processes. The North Central accreditation process, agreed to as suggested by UNL, required self-study, and because of UNL's focus on strategic academic planning, the 2006 Gallup survey included new questions on those topics.

According to the Gallup report, a vast majority of survey participants reported seeing a great deal of value in academic strategic planning, earning a 3.37 out of 5 score, with similar numbers reported in awareness of university priorities and awareness of strategic planning.

A Powerpoint file of Gallup data is available on Chancellor Perlman's Web site, www.unl.edu/ucomm/chancllr.
