Housing puts lottery system into play

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

For the first time, competition for UNL's apartment-style residence units will take place via an online "lottery" system, UNL Housing officials announced Dec. 6.

From Feb. 7-12, new candidates for fall units in The Village and The Courtyards will be entered into a lottery system.

The lottery system will alleviate lines for signup, provide a fast and accurate mechanism for choosing new Village and Courtyards dwellers.

The selection process also provides a fair system for equal access to the popular two- and four-bedroom apartment-style units, said Sylvana Airan, assistant director of Contracts and Student Accounts at UNL Housing.

Returning students will already have signed up to stay in the units, and as many as 25 to 30 percent of students living in Village or Courtyards units will choose to stay, Airan said. She said the lottery opens up a fair way to get new students into the open units, which will number about 300 to 400 beds of the 500 to 700 available.

"If you're already in, you stay," Airan said. "But we needed a fairer and easier way for new returning students to gain access to the apartment-style units. When we asked students for suggestions, the lottery was the obvious way. Students will not have to stand in line, they can go to the Web site and fill out their application and have the same chance as everyone else."

The lottery sign-up is Feb. 7-12, but Housing officials are beginning to communicate about it now, as students complete their first-semester courses and prepare to leave for the holiday break. Parents' newsletter communication will include information about the lottery.
