Big 12 student event to draw 1,200 to Lincoln

 UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

More than 1,200 students from Big 12 universities will converge on UNL Feb. 15-18 for the annual Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government.

The leadership conference marks a 30th anniversary with events in Lincoln focused on social and academic empowerment in the African-American community. The conference theme is "The Power of One."

Students attending will have the opportunity to attend workshops, a career and graduate/professional school fair, and hear keynote addresses from Jonathan Sprinkles and UNL alumnus Aaron Davis. Events will take place at the Nebraska Union and Pershing Center.

The mission of the Big 12 Conference on Black Student Government is to provide strong, determined and courageous leadership and advocacy to affect social and academic environments toward consideration of the black community's collective concerns and issues where it pertains to educational, socio-cultural, economic and spiritual well-being.

The conference will sponsor two evening events that are open to the public - a Gospel Extravaganza 8 p.m. Feb. 16 and a Step Show 8:30 p.m. Feb. 17, both at Pershing Center. Tickets for both events can be purchased at the door.

Participants will take part in a Feb. 15 opening ceremony featuring a 7 p.m. member institution roll call. On Feb. 16, speakers and workshops continue with the career and graduate/professional school fair in the afternoon at Holiday Inn. The Gospel Extravaganza follows in the evening.

On Feb. 17, speakers and workshops fill the day with a closing banquet 6 p.m., followed by the Step Show at 8:30 p.m. Rev. Irving Fryar will conclude the conference with a worship service Feb. 18 at 11 a.m.

Davis is known as "The Enthusiator" because of his contagious enthusiasm to equip others to perform like champions. Jonathan Sprinkles is the 2006 College Speaker of the Year selected by members of the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. The author of several books, informational audio projects and countless articles, his writings have been published internationally and are frequently cited by industry experts.
