Beginning this summer "Room in New York" will travel to museums in Boston, Washington, D.C., and Chicago in "Edward Hopper," the first comprehensive exhibition of the artist's work to be shown outside of New York City in more than 25 years.

Sheldon's masterpiece, acquired for the F. M. Hall Collection in 1936, is one of approximately 60 paintings included in the exhibition, which promises to offer new perspectives on one of the most significant American artists of the 20th century. In its evocation of the uneasy relationship between the figures and its composition, Room in New York has long been acknowledged as a key work in the artist's career. The painting was created in 1932.

"Edward Hopper," organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will be on view in that city May 6 to Aug. 19, after which it will travel to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, Sept. 16 to Jan. 21, and the Art Institute of Chicago, Feb. 16 to May 11.

"Room in New York" returns to the Sheldon galleries in June 2008.
