Editor's Note -In celebration of Women's History Month, "From the Archives" is featuring the university's women's physical education program during March. The program was a leader among the nation's colleges and universities as NU was the first school in the nation to grant both a college degree and a professional teaching certificate in physical education. The physical education departments for women and men merged in September 1973.

Marybeth Wallace Brown, a 1906 NU graduate who earned a certificate in physical education, was instrumental in initiating the physical education program at Omaha Central High School. She was also responsible for a gift to the Department of Physical Education for Women that allowed for the purchase of exercise equipment.

Born in Pawnee City, Neb., she married Mortimer J. Brown, a noted chemist, in 1907. The following year, the couple traveled to China, where she led programs in gymnastics and English at a mission school for girls.

After settling in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Brown became active in the YWCA, education and civic activities. Brown was twice honored as one of the five outstanding citizens of Niagara Falls. In 1954, she was given a distinguished service award by the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.

Brown retained her interest in the Department for Physical Education for Women, visiting NU frequently.

In 1962, Brown endowed the department with funds to purchase equipment for a new building.

The donation was used to purchase equipment for the Women's Physical Education Building (now Mabel Lee Hall), dedicated Nov. 8, 1968, following her 1964 death.
