Research, creative activity on display

 BY VICKI MILLER, RESEARCH

The fifth annual UNL Research Fair will celebrate research and creative activities during events April 10-12 at the Nebraska Union.

The Research Fair features presentations by representatives from foundations and federal funding agencies on research needs, opportunities, priorities and funding; events celebrating faculty achievements; displays of graduate- and undergraduate-conducted research and creative activity; and opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about graduate school.

Michael Teitelbaum, vice president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, will kick off the conference at 9:30 a.m. April 10 with his presentation, "Leveraging the U.S. Lead in Science." Teitelbaum will discuss concerns that the U.S. is losing its traditional lead in basic science, the importance of this leadership to the nation's prosperity and steps that might be taken in higher education to better leverage science for U.S. economic advantage.

The lead speaker April 11 is Nathaniel Pitts, director of integrated activities for the National Science Foundation. He will discuss "Managing Science at the Frontier" in his 8 a.m. presentation. Pitts speaks nationally and internationally on issues concerning science and technology policy and the evaluation of the U.S. basic research enterprise.

Other presentations will be offered throughout the fair. This year's speakers include representatives from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Education. The fair includes opportunities for students to showcase their work at a graduate student poster competition April 11 and an undergraduate poster session April 12.

All presentations are free and open to the public. Books written by UNL faculty in 2006 will be on display. A complete schedule is available on the Research Fair Web site at http://researchfair.unl.edu.
