Great Plains gallery hosts artists' public creation of clay sculptures

Kearney artists Martha and Del Pettigrew are creating two clay sculptures as interactive artists-in-residence at the Great Plains Art Gallery through April 27.

Martha Pettigrew will create a sculpture approximately 40 inches tall of a Plains Indian woman. Del Pettigrew will create a sculpture approximately 27 inches tall of a Great Plains animal. Both sculptures will be cast in bronze and become part the museum's permanent collection.

The public, including tours from Lincoln Public Schools, will be able to observe and interact with the artists while they work. The Pettigrews will be sculpting from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m., April 19-21 and 24-27, and 2 to 4 p.m. April 22 at the museum.

A professional videographer will interview the sculptors and film them at work, as well as film the bronzing at the foundry to produce a DVD that shows a comprehensive view of the sculpting process. The museum plans to package the DVD, sculptures and selections from the permanent collection as a traveling exhibition for public schools in central and western Nebraska.

The Great Plains Art Museum is open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Sundays. There is no admission charge.
