Event to mark University Libraries' three-millionth volume

 BY JOANIE BARNES, UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

The University Libraries are preparing to welcome the three-millionth book to the university's research collection.

A ceremony and presentation will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Love Library Auditorium. The book - a rare find, keeping with the tradition of adding millionth volumes to the collection - will be unveiled during the ceremony. A lecture on the book's significance in literary history will be offered.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries, UNL and the Nebraska Humanities Council.

It has taken 138 years for the University Libraries research collection to reach the three-million book plateau. The collection is the largest and only comprehensive research library in Nebraska.

In 1970, one year after UNL's centennial celebration, the University Libraries added the one-millionth book, the "Workes of Geffray Chaucer newlye printed." The book, published in 1542, was donated by Johnnie Johnsen.

It took 21 additional years for the collection to reach 2 million volumes. William Shakespeares' "First Folio" was added in 1991. The book, published in 1623, was donated by Sydney Johnsen Wayland, daughter of Johnnie Johnson.

The millionth-books are held in the Archives and Special Collections area of the University Libraries.
