'Rocket Science' opens Sept. 28 at the Ross

The quirky independent comedy "Rocket Science" - directed by Jeffrey Blitz - opens Sept. 28 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Set in New Jersey, the film follows Hal Hefner (played by newcomer Reese Thompson) in his attempts to go through high school unnoticed. This is made considerably harder by his obvious stutter and inability to verbalize even the most basic statements, not to mention his thoughts and feelings.

Bringing Hefner no help are his strange and abusive older brother Earl (Vincent Piazza), his recently divorced parents, his mother's live-in boyfriend, and his school's inadequate speech therapist. When the school's bossy, attractive debate champion Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick) tries to recruit Hal as her debating partner, good sense tells him no but his hormones cry yes. Soon Hal finds himself confronted with growing feelings for Ginny as well as the looming humiliation of having to compete in the state finals.

"Rocket Science" (rated R for some language and sexual material) plays at the Ross through Oct. 11.

Also showing (through Oct. 11) at the Ross is "My Best Friend."

The film follows Francois, a middle-aged antique dealer, who is blindsided by the revelation that none of his friends like him.

His business partner Catherine makes him a bet: if he can produce his best friend, she will let him keep the massive Greek vase he acquired that afternoon on the company tab. If not, it's hers. Francois naively tears through his address book, trying to shoehorn a contact into the all-important role.

"My Best Friend" is rated PG-13 for some strong language.
