Student Affairs to host empowerment forum

 BY KELLY BARTLING, UNIVERSITY COMMUNICATIONS

UNL is revamping its annual diversity retreat into the Empowerment Forum, a free event open to all students, faculty and staff interested in diversity issues.

The Empowerment Forum is Nov. 2 at the East Union. In previous years the diversity retreat was held off-campus.

Tim Alvarez, assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs, said the Empowerment Forum is a community effort. It's a place to discuss issues, create personal action plans and "work and deal with issues related to diversity."

"'Now is the Time' is the theme, and we're hoping for 200 students and 100 faculty and staff," Alvarez said.

Alvarez said the program's name change reflects the new direction for the retreat/forum, and signals the change toward emphasis on personal and community empowerment, a move toward a broader audience, and more input, mentorship and collaboration from faculty and staff.

The Joint American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges Task Force was formed to address the next steps in diversity leadership. The format for the retreat is based on "A Report of the AASCU/NASULGC Task Force on Diversity."

The day begins with registration at 8 a.m. with a general session, followed by community building sessions and personal action planning. Participants will be served lunch. The event is schedule to conclude at 2:30 p.m.

"The process is very reflective in nature," Alvarez said. "We want the sharing of thoughts, ideas, stories and experiences to facilitate the development of action plans of individuals and departments with respect to issues of diversity."

Registrations, due by Oct. 19, can be made online at http://stuafs.unl.edu/empower/.
