GOT THE BEAT - A member of Yamato performs on a Okedo-daiko, a barrel-like drum often placed horizontally and played by two drummers. Yamato will perform 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Lied Center.

A pre-performance talk by Maureen Brase-Houchin, director of the Kokyo Taiko Drummers of Lincoln, begins at 7 p.m. in the Lied's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.

Yamato was founded in 1993 in Nara, "the land of Yamato," which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. The troupe travels the world showcasing traditional Japanese taiko drums in modern, choreographed performances.

Among the instruments used by Yamato include: Hirado-daiko, a term for a drum that is wider than it is deep; Odaiko, "big, fat drum" made from a huge tree over 400 years old, it refers to a drum of any type that is larger than 84 cm in diameter; Okedo-daiko, a drum constructed like a barrel and is often placed horizontally on a tall stand and played by two drummers at the same time; and Shime-daiko, a rope-tensioned drum.

Tickets are $38, $33 and $26. Students with a valid NCard and youth 18 and younger may purchase tickets for half price.

For more information, or to purchase tickets, go to www.liedcenter.org or call 472-4747.
