VisionMaker Film Festival plays the Ross

Native American filmmakers Chris Eyre, Sterlin Harjo, Bennie Klain, Leighton Peterson, and J. Carlos Peinado will take part in the VisionMaker Film Festival, Nov. 16-29 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

The goal of the festival is to present high-quality narrative and documentary films made by and about Native Americans and indigenous people.

The festival - which includes 12 feature films and 11 short films - is presented by Native American Public Telecommunications in partnership with the Lincoln Indian Center and the Ross.

The visiting filmmakers will conduct question and answer sessions with audiences following screenings.

Klain and Peterson open the festival at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16, appearing with their films "Weaving Worlds" and "Share the Wealth," respectively.

Eyre - a director and producer - will discuss his new film, "Imprint," at 3 p.m. Nov. 18. Harjo is appearing with his new film "Four Sheets to the Wind" at 3 p.m. Nov. 25.

Peinado is appearing with "Waterbuster" at 7 p.m. Nov. 28.

In addition to the screenings, festival organizers will collaborate with the Lincoln Indian Center, Lincoln Public Schools, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and the College of Fine and Performing Arts to present workshops and discussions with filmmakers and humanities scholars.

The VisionMaker Film Festival is curated by award-winning director Chris Eyre (Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribe of Oklahoma), the Sundance Institute's Bird Runningwater (Cheyenne and Mescalero Apache), Ross director Danny Ladely, NAPT executive director Shirley K. Sneve (Rosebud Sioux), and NAPT project coordinator Penny Costello.
