Dylan film opens Jan. 18 at the Ross

Six different actors help bring the life and music of Bob Dylan to life in the film, "I'm Not There," opening Jan. 18 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

Directed by Todd Haynes, "I'm Not There" is an experimental take on the life of one of popular music's revered and enigmatic artists. In keeping with the impossible-to-pin-down nature of Dylan, Haynes cast six actors to portray several incarnations of the musician. The work spans several decades and genres of music.

Woody (Marcus Carl Franklin) is a young black child with a folk music obsession; Jack Rollins (Christian Bale) is an upstart folksinger whose protest songs have ignited an entire generation; Arthur (Ben Wishaw) is a Rimbaud-esque figure who has begun to embrace a new form of lyrical poetry; Robbie (Heath Ledger) is a well-known actor whose marriage to the lovely Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg) crumbles under the weight of his lifestyle; Billy (Richard Gere) is a slippery frontiersman who echoes Dylan's infatuation with the Old West and American folklore; and, finally, there is the substance-abusing, confrontational Jude (Cate Blanchett), who represents Dylan in the turbulent mid-1960s.

Also opening Jan. 18 at the Ross is "For the Bible Tells Me So," a documentary that attempts to reconcile homosexuality and Biblical scripture, while revealing that church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a misinterpretation of the Bible.

Directed by Dan Karslake, "For the Bible Tells Me So" won the Audience Award for Best Documetary at the Seattle International film Festival.

"For the Bible Tells Me So" (unrated) and "I'm Not There" (rated R for language, some sexuality and nudity) play through Jan. 31 at the Ross.
