"The Mikado," or "The Town of Titipu," is a comic opera in two acts, and is the ninth of fourteen collaborations between Gilbert and Sullivan. It opened March 14, 1885, in London, where it ran at the Savoy Theatre for 672 performances - the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Setting the opera in Japan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirize British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese.

"The Gondoliers" is considered one of the best works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Set in Venice and the fictitious kingdom of Barataria in the mid-18th century, it boasts a sunny score and story full of the best Gilbertian ingredients with live orchestra.

Opera A La Carte was founded in 1970 by British Gilbert and Sullivan expert Richard Sheldon.

Sheldon was born and raised in England and has enjoyed a lifelong interest in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. He has worked with many well-known artists, including Donald Adams, who served as principal comedian with Gilbert and Sullivan for All.

Sheldon will offer a pre-performance talk at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21 and 22 in the Lied's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.

Tickets for the Opera A La Carte performances are $42 and $32. UNL students with a valid NCard and youth age 18 and younger may purchase tickets for half price.
