'Passport' continues at the Ross

The final two "passport" movies open May 16 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center.

In May, the Ross is showing four films from around the world - "Still Life" from China, "Caramel" from Lebanon, "The Violin" from Mexico, and "Body of War" from the United States.

The four films represent a diversity of cultures and an array of filmmaking styles.

The Ross is selling a "passport" price of $15 for the general public, $10 for students and Friends of the Ross, to admit patrons to all four films. Passports are available at the Ross ticket counter.

The passport schedule opened with "Still Life" and "The Violin," showing through May 15. The schedule continues with "Body of War" and "Caramel."

"Body of War" is a coming-home story featuring Tomas Young, a 25-year-old soldier who served less than a week in Iraq before a bullet severed his spine. In the film, Young evolves into a new person, dealing with his disability and finding his own unique and passionate voice against the war.

"Body of War," produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, features two original songs by Eddie Vedder.

"Caramel" is a comedic drama about five women who meet regularly in a Beirut beauty salon. The salon is a microcosm of the city where several generations come into contact, talk and confide in each other.

Between haircuts and sugar waxing with Caramel, the women's conversations revolve around men, sex and motherhood.

"Caramel" (rated PG) and "Body of War" (unrated) play through May 22 at the Ross.
