Chancellor announces commission members

This is an edited version of an e-mail sent to all faculty and staff on Dec. 19 from Chancellor Harvey Perlman.

Dear Colleagues:
I have not had the occasion to write you often this semester and as I reflect on it, maybe that was a good thing compared to the few semesters before this one. As the semester ends, however, I did want to report briefly on a few matters.
First, the economy. In view of the past year’s budget reductions, I was particularly encouraged by a bit of good news recently reported in the Wall Street Journal. The story indicated that soaring beef cattle prices and a grain shortage is fueling the agricultural heart of America in leading us out of recession. As the agricultural sector of our state’s economy is so critical to the well-being of the state as a whole, this is certainly a welcome bit of good news for all of us, whether we are directly engaged in agriculture or not.
I also wanted to update you on some important university matters. It has taken much longer than I would have preferred to name members of the two Chancellor’s Commissions, the Commission on the Status of People of Color and the Commission on the Status of Women, but most of the membership is now firm. I really appreciate the willingness of the following individuals to serve.
Status of Women, Faculty: Julie Albrecht, Jennifer Brand, Rhae Drijber, Joan Erickson, Susan Fritz, Karen Kunc, Karen Lyons, Ali Moeller, Susan Poser, Joy Ritchie. Staff: Jan Deeds, Debra DeWald, Mary Elliott, Michelle Howell, Kathy Notter, Sheila Orth, Kelli Smith, Diane Wasser. Students: Maureen Gallagher, Chelsea Hammond, Grace Helton, Alisa Rosales, Shanna Rosentrater, Joann Ross, Sandra Sattler Weber, Megan Spilinek, Miranda Swanson.
Status of People of Color, Faculty: Leon Caldwell, Ralph DeAyala, John Foster, Marjorie Lou, Lance Perez, Anna Shavers, Shashi Verma, Darryl White, Marcella Rafaelli. Staff: Ric Barrera, Naciska Gilmore, Chris Gloria, John Goldrich, Diana Kirkendoll, Jie Li, Gina Matkin, Linda Ybarra. Students: Lisa Avila, Teresa Tran Thuy Nguyen, Abiola Ayodele, Omaid Zabih.
As previously announced, I have asked Professor Colleen Jones from the management department to work in my office half-time as an assistant to the chancellor to assist in our efforts to increase the diversity of our campus. I believe this is an important initiative, one that goes directly to the quality of the university we wish to be.
I do want to thank each and every one of you for your efforts on behalf of the university this year. Your accomplishments continue to mount and you can take considerable pride as we send another group of UNL graduates into the world.

Harvey
