Arboretum seeks botanical art entries

BY KARMA LARSEN, NEBRASKA STATEWIDE ARBORETUM

Illustrations of native trees, grasses and perennials are being solicited for a botanical print competition sponsored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. The winning illustration will be used to create the arboretum's 2005 botanical print.

The Nebraska Arts Council, which is helping fund this project, will participate in judging the competition. With its support, NSA Director Jim Locklear said, the scope of this competition has broadened.

"The prints we've created to this point have held to the tradition of scientific detail and accuracy. But every year we've received some wonderful submissions that didn't fit within the confines of botanical accuracy, so this year, we're offering an additional category for more creative expression of plants," Locklear said.

Entry deadline is Nov. 12. Only digital images or slides of paintings, drawings or prints will be accepted. Artists may submit more than one illustration. The subject matter for entries may be any of these:

• Trees: Bitternut hickory, Carya cordiformis; bur oak, Quercus macrocarpa; chinkapin oak, Quercus muehlenbergii; hophornbeam, Ostrya virginiana; limber pine, Pinus flexilis; or Ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa

• Grasses: Indiangrass, Sporobolis heterolepis; or little bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium

• Perennials: Jack-in-the-pulpit, Arisaema triphyllum; pasque flower, Pulsatilla patens; prairie gentian, Eustoma grandiflorum; evening primrose, Oenothera macrocarpa; prairie spiderwort, Tradescantia occidentalis; or purple poppy mallow, Callirhoe involucrata

There will be a $150 prize for the winning entry, which will be announced next spring. Copies of the prints will be made available.

For an entry form, contact the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum at 472-7923, e-mail klarsen1@unl.edu or write NSA, P.O. Box 830715, Lincoln, NE 68585-0715. More information can be found at http://arboretum.unl.edu/poppages/botprintcomp.html.
