A Piece of University History

Smoking in public isn't a new issue to Lincoln, as this cartoon indicates. With the city ordinance banning smoking in Lincoln's public areas on the ballot this week, we thought we'd share a cartoon to show it was a contentious issue even 100 years ago.

The poem and image come from the 1904 Sombrero, a predecessor to the Cornhusker yearbook at the University of Nebraska. It was in a section called "Joshes," which contained jokes, cartoons, spoofs or "roasts" of professors and students. It also listed popular books and activities and other student humor, which appeared in the yearbooks for many years. This cartoon refers to the iron fence that surrounded the university from 1892 to 1922. The fence now stands on the O Street side of Wyuka Cemetery in central Lincoln.

In this weekly feature, the Scarlet takes a look back at a moment of UNL's past through a historical photo, story or short trivia item.
