A Piece of University History
This image from the 1902 Sombrero, an early University of Nebraska yearbook, shows a group shot of the university's Mandolin Orchestra that year.
The orchestra was directed by Robert Rhone, a teacher in the School of Music, and included first, second and third mandolins, violins, guitars, a cello, mandola, "clarionet," a banjo and a pianist. The Sombrero said the orchestra was a part of the School of Music, which was "prepared to offer complete courses in all branches of musical art and science."
Also from the 1902 Sombrero: "If you are seeking artistic attainments and a congenial musical atmosphere, correspond with the Director Willard Kimball."
