NU Press reorganization addresses future

(The following email was sent to all faculty and staff on Feb. 3, from Chancellor Harvey Perlman.)

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to let you know that earlier today we announced a reorganization of the University of Nebraska Press. This reorganization is designed to respond to dramatic changes in the publishing business. The University Press remains one of our most important outreach functions and is, in many ways, the flag bearer for the humanities for the Lincoln campus. I give you my assurance that this reorganization is in no way a signal that our support for the Press is diminished. What we must do, and have done, is to address some issues so that the Press can continue to serve our campus successfully in the years ahead.

Last month, the Board of Regents approved a new lease for space for the Press that significantly reduced its rent. In addition to consolidating functions and enhancing our e-commerce capacities, today we have regrettably eliminated six full-time positions. All of these steps were taken only after careful study and with the advice of a small committee which included Gary Dunham, current director, and Steve Hilliard, a past interim director of the Press. The plan also includes some interim bridge financing as well as a series of strategies to increase revenue.

This campus has had in recent years far too much experience in downsizing and personnel reductions. I am personally saddened that we must do so here. However, the stark reality is that the personnel budget of the Press cannot be sustained by its revenue. We of course wish those employees affected by this action the very best and will make available to them such resources as we have available for such circumstances.

Again, let me emphasize that this action is designed to strengthen the University of Nebraska Press so that it can continue its extraordinary record of achievement.

- Harvey
