Statewide examines children's obesity

This week on Statewide executive producer Bill Kelly looks at the growing problem of obesity among our state's young people. This episode of Statewide will air at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26 on NETV.

First, Kelly looks at school lunch programs in Nebraska and finds that our schools are struggling to meet federal nutrition guidelines while still preparing meals that students will actually want to eat. Kelly visits Grand Island Senior High School to talk with nutritionists and students about what that district is doing to prepare meals that won't contribute to obesity problems.

Kelly also investigates the fitness side of the obesity problem with a look at physical education programs in Nebraska schools. Some programs provide little actual physical activity while others are geared toward athletic team training and leave little room for less athletic students to create a pattern of lifetime fitness. And, an interview with nationally recognized writer and psychologist Mary Pipher offers perspective on the role parents and families play in a child's eating patterns and behavior.

Statewide repeats on NETV Sunday at noon. It repeats on NETV2 Saturdays at 9:30 p.m., Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m.
