Antivirus software change begins at UNL

A combined effort between central information technology units on all NU campuses and Central Administration will bring a change to antivirus software at UNL.

The current contract with antivirus software provider McAfee Inc. will expire and an evaluation of available antivirus products was conducted over the past several months. This search selected McAfee and Sophos antivirus as prime contenders, allowing each campus to conduct its own analysis of the products, software costs and transition expenses.

Information Services at UNL chose Sophos, while the other campuses and Central Administration will continue their relationships with McAfee.

Product and price factored into the decision to switch at UNL. According to Information Services, the contract is for three years. Sophos will provide antivirus coverage for all faculty, staff and students, including home computers of faculty and staff. It also provides anti-spam protection for campus e-mail systems.

The current contract with McAfee expires at the end of June. However, with the new contract already in place, there will be a two-month overlap to accommodate the migration to the new Sophos product.

Information Services will be providing more additional information about Sophos and will involve IT representatives from across campus in the implementation process over the coming weeks.

Sophos representatives and Information Services are working to create a customized CD that will help with uninstalling McAfee and installing the new program. A representative from Sophos will be on campus in mid-May.

Information on the new antivirus software contract and how to obtain software will be provided online at www.unl.edu/is. Sophos information is available at www.sophos.com.
