UNL celebrated the completion of a research facility at the Barta Brothers Ranch near Long Pine on June 23.
The new facility is named in honor of brothers Clifford and James Barta in recognition of their gift of 6,000 acres of rangeland in Brown and Rock counties in 1996 to the University of Nebraska Foundation. The brothers also provided an estate gift to establish the Barta Brothers Fund, a permanent endowment for ongoing support of agriculture research in Nebraska.
"This most generous gift from Clifford and James Barta established the Barta Brothers Ranch which allows scientists, extension educators and students to compare livestock grazing systems, study complex plant communities, and explore water interactions associated with grasslands," said John Owens, the Neal and Leone Harlan vice chancellor of the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
"The ability to have both fundamental research projects and practical demonstrations on the same ranch is proving to be a valuable asset to both the worldwide scientific community and local livestock producers," he said. "All of this work is resulting in one of the most successful, real-world laboratory and educational projects in the Great Plains."
The Barta Brothers Ranch Research Facility is a two-story, 4,800 square-foot building designed to help facilitate and coordinate research by providing meeting room for up to 30 people and dormitory space for researchers. It will also house a museum in tribute to the lives of the Barta brothers.
