Construction to temporarily disrupt power

Safety concerns related to a UNL construction project will result in a temporary electrical outage on the weekend of Oct. 15.

According to John Marker of Facilities, Management and Planning, workers will disconnect a major electrical feed line into the City Campus Utility Plant shortly after sunrise on Oct. 15. If unfavorable weather prevents the work, Oct. 16 will be used. The dates were selected to coincide with fall semester break (Oct. 17-18) and a low level of student activity on campus.

Marker said the construction work - which is estimated to take two hours - is to occur in close proximity to the feed line and worker safety is the main reason for the outage.

He added that the work is, "pretty routine," and could take a minimum of 45 minutes.

"This will have an impact on campus," Marker said. "We plan to keep critical areas up and running, but electricity will be shut off to many buildings."

As the utility plant will be without power, many City Campus buildings will also be without steam for processes or heating. Chilled water for building air conditioning will also be interrupted in some buildings.

For safety reasons, all faculty staff and students are discouraged from working in affected buildings during the outage.

For questions and concerns about the outage, contact Charlie Griesen, utility services construction coordinator, at 472-8612 or cgriesen@unlnotes.unl.edu.
