Russian National Ballet to perform classic at Lied
Backed by the famed score by Tchaikovsky, the Russian National Ballet will perform "Swan Lake," 7:30 p.m. April 29 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.
Sarah Brown, a UNL lecturer of dance, will present a pre-performance talk, 7 p.m. in the Lied's Steinhart Room. Seating is limited.
The Russian National Ballet was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s. Legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet, Sergei Radchenko, sought to realize his vision of a company that would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet.
Under Radchenko's direction, the Russian National Ballet continues to expand its repertoire. In addition to commissioning new works from within Russia and abroad, the company specializes in 20th century full-length ballets such as "Cinderella," "Romeo and Juliet," "Legend of Love," "Stone Flower," and "The Golden Age."
"Swan Lake" is a full-length, four-act ballet that tells the story of young Prince Siegfried, who happens upon a group of mysterious swans. The swans are actually young maidens who are under the spell of an evil sorcerer. The spell can only be broken when a man falls truly in love with the most beautiful of the swan maidens, Odette.
Enthralled by Odette's beauty, the prince pledges his eternal love - but later, at a party in honor of his 21st birthday, he is tricked by the sorcerer into declaring his love for Odile, an evil twin of Odette. Realizing his inadvertent betrayal, the prince rushes back to the lake. There, he battles the sorcerer and destroys his power. The lovers are then reunited.
Tickets are $39, $34 and $29. UNL students with a valid NCard and youth 18 and younger may purchase tickets for half price.
